Tobacco causes millions of deaths every year. Although this figure has seen a marked decline in recent years, tobacco is still responsible for premature deaths every year. While some people manage to kick the tobacco habit just as easily as they took it up, this is unfortunately not the case for the majority. In this way, for a number of years now, various methods have been proposed to try to help people give up the nasty tobacco habit. Gums, patches, e-cigarettes or hypnosis – there are a range of options available to you should you wish to try quitting smoking.

Twice as likely to quit smoking with vaping

Quitting smoking is not that complicated. Although addiction to nicotine does complicate matters somewhat, quitting smoking is a task within anyone’s grasp once they are well-prepared. And while willpower is obviously the operative word in this regard, the tool used to achieve this aim is nearly just as important.

No, this isn’t just a random figure pulled out of a hat. In fact, a recent UK study published recently in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that people who used e-cigarettes to quit smoking were twice as likely to succeed. In the group of participants who used so-called “traditional” nicotine substitutes such as patches and other gums, 9.9% were no longer smoking after one year, compared to 18% in the group using vaping to quit smoking!

While this figure might seem impressive, it is actually some distance from the true possibilities offered by vaping. Indeed, for this study, all the vapers received the same e-cigarette model! Several hundred models are available, some of which work very differently. As such, if each vaper had been given a model tailored to their individual needs, based on the type of smoker that they are, there is no doubt that this figure of 18% would be considerably higher.

Why does vaping work so well?

There is no question that e-cigarettes help you quit smoking. Moreover, it’s a safe bet that you, the smoker, will know someone among your family and friends who has successfully quit smoking using this method. However, why would vaping work better than other methods?

There is no easy answer to this question. Vaping offers so many things that other substitutes are unable to offer, that it would be difficult to pinpoint the main reason.

However, we would like to point out that, while smokers trying to quit tobacco using patches or gums will merely be supplying their body with a dose of nicotine to replace that provided by cigarettes, vapers will get enjoyment from quitting smoking.

Indeed, using e-cigarettes to quit smoking is a pleasant experience.

Rather than merely applying a patch on your body and gritting your teeth until your urge to smoke fades, you will be able to go out with your friends who smoke, just like before, and share and enjoy a “ciggy break” with them.

Instead of merely taking some gum and chewing it until your teeth are set on edge, you will be able to encounter previously unattainable or even unknown flavours. You couldn’t smoke a cigarette that tasted like brownies, strawberry shortcake, or tiramisu, could you? Well, you can vape those kinds of flavours! That can make quitting smoking a genuinely pleasant experience.

But that’s not all. Vaping also means that you don’t have to give up the familiar hand-to-mouth action! This action of bringing your cigarette up to your mouth, and then blowing out smoke, is automatic for you. Vaping allows you to keep it up! The difference? Your mouth will no longer blow out smoke, but vapour. According to the UK Ministry of Health, this vapour is considered to be at least 95% less harmful for your body than cigarette smoke.
