“Our advice on e-cigarettes remains unchanged – vaping isn’t completely risk free but is far less harmful than smoking tobacco. There is no situation where it would be better for your health to continue smoking rather than switching completely to vaping.” PHE

“Our advice on e-cigarettes remains unchanged – vaping isn’t completely risk free but is far less harmful than smoking tobacco. There is no situation where it would be better for your health to continue smoking rather than switching completely to vaping,” said the PHE on Twitter.

This tweet comes in response to the panic that is spreading across the globe due to the cases of “vape-related” lung disease that have popped up across the US. A man from Kansas has become the ninth person to die of this condition and the total number of reported cases has now hit 500. The other tragic deaths took place in California, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri and Oregon.

The use of unlicensed products

Confirming previous reports, a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, has indicated that the vast majority of patients suffering from the condition, had vaped unlicensed THC products.

Supporting the PHE’s tweet, the New Nicotine Alliance (NNA) is also pointing out that vapers should not be concerned as long as they are using regulated products. “Suffice to say that vaping nicotine is not to blame for any of these episodes, but instead illegal oil-based THC liquids bought from unregulated vendors in America, not the UK. In short, drug dealers. The advice from Public Health England – and from the NNA – remains the same.”
