Snus is a moist powder tobacco product that is placed under the upper lip for extended periods. It is considered as an effective harm reduction product which has helped thousands quit smoking and is mostly popular in Norway and Sweden. In fact the popularity of snus has led to these two countries reporting the lowest rates of lung cancer in Europe.

In the rest of Europe we have been witnessing efforts by public health experts to lift off the current ban on the product that is in place throughout the EU. Subsequently snus started gaining popularity worldwide, and with the increase in consumption, manufacturers are even introducing new flavors.

THE Fact.MR global snus market report

The Fact.MR report predicts that the global snus market is expected to grow exponentially and is projected to register 7.5% CAGR between 2017 and 2022. The main forecasts of the report include the fact that unsurprisingly Europe is expected to be the main player in the global snus market, where the industry is projected to reach nearly US$ 600 million in revenue by 2022.

North America is also expected to experience significant growth in this market, as people are becoming more aware that the product is safer than regular cigarettes. In fact another snus market research report which was released last August looked solely at this market, and indicated that there is a growing interest in the product across the continent.

The US report had focused on market growth in key states, mainly California, Texas, New York, Florida and Illinois, whilst taking in consideration the main snus manufacturers such as Swedish match, Imperial Tobacco Group, Reynolds American ETC.

The more harm reduction options, the better

Anti-smoking experts regard the growing popularity of snus worldwide as a positive step forward for public health. “E-cigarettes are having a major impact, but they don’t work for everyone in all circumstances. We want to see wide availability of all safer nicotine products as alternatives to smoking,” said Chair for the New Nicotine Alliance (NNA), Professor Gerry Stimson back in January.

Public Health experts agree that increasing the variety of harm reduction products, increases the likelihood for smokers to find the method that most suits them, hence optimizes their chances of quitting.
