Snus is a moist powder tobacco product that is placed under the upper lip for extended periods. It is considered as an effective harm reduction product which has helped thousands quit smoking and is mostly popular in Norway and Sweden. In fact the popularity of snus has led to these two countries reporting the lowest rates of lung cancer in Europe.

“E-cigarettes are having a major impact, but they don’t work for everyone in all circumstances. We want to see wide availability of all safer nicotine products as alternatives to smoking.”Professor Gerry Stimson, Chairperson, NNA

However snus is gaining popularity worldwide. In Europe we have been witnessing efforts by public health experts to lift off the current ban on the product that is in place throughout the EU.

US Snus industry

The popularity of snus in Norway and Sweden has led to these two countries reporting the lowest rates of lung cancer in Europe.
Similarly, this report titled United States Snus Market by Manufacturers, States, Type and Application, Forecast to 2022, indicates that there is a growing interest towards the product in the US, and looks into its growth in key states, mainly California, Texas, New York, Florida and Illinois, whilst taking in consideration the main snus manufacturers such as Swedish match, Imperial Tobacco Group, Reynolds American ETC.

The report looks into the product’s pricing, revenue and growth rate forecast from 2017 to 2022, whilst breaking down the the manufacturing cost and processes. It analyzes the industrial chain, sourcing strategies and the sales and distribution of snus, and is concluded by looking into research findings pertaining to the product.

Another option for harm reduction

Anti-smoking experts will regard the growing popularity of the product in the US as a positive step forward for public health. “E-cigarettes are having a major impact, but they don’t work for everyone in all circumstances. We want to see wide availability of all safer nicotine products as alternatives to smoking.” said Chair for the New Nicotine Alliance (NNA), Professor Gerry Stimson back in January. Increasing the variety of harm reduction products, increases the likelihood for smokers to find the method that most suits them, hence optimizing their chances of quitting.
